The President only had two major public items on the agenda for the day a quick visit to New York and an evening appearance before a special Joint Session of Congress on Health Reform.

The morning trip to New York was to attend a special memorial for Walter Cronkite where he delivered remarks.

The speech before the Joint Session of Congress was designed to restore the momentum that seemed to have been lost during the August recess inpushing through health care reform.
