SS George C. Yount was laid down on 7 January 1943 at Wilmington, Calif., by the California Shipbuilding Corp. under a Maritime Commission contract (MCE hull 708); launched on 4 February 1943; sponsored by Mrs. E. Rickenbacker; delivered to the American President Lines, for operation by a civilian crew under a War Shipping Administration contract; acquired by the Navy on a bare-boat basis on 30 November 1943; modified by the Matson Navigation Co., at San Francisco, Calif., to for naval service; renamed Ascella and designated 10 prepare her A -137 on 14 December 1943; and commissioned at Hunters Point,Calif., on 7 January 1944, Lt. Comdr. Alexander Kusebach, USNR, in command.
Two days after commissioning the cargo ship arrived at the Naval Supply D Calif., to load stores, provisions, and ammunition. Folliwing brief shakedown training, she departed San Francisco on 21 January. Nine days later, Ascella entered port at Pearl Harbor and began discharging her cargo. On 3 February, she shifted berths and began loadin supplies bound for the Army occupation garrison on newly won Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. A week later, the vessel put to sea and, after a nine-day voyage, entered the lagoon at Kwajalein. She spent the remainder of February unloading her cargo before departing Kwajalein on 3 March. After interrupting her voyage at Pearl Harbor to drop off three landing craft for repairs, the ship returned to the Naval Supply Depot, Oakland, on the 23d. There she took on another load of supplies, embarked 83 Navy men for passage to Hawaii, and stood out of San Francisco Bay. She entered Pearl Harbor on 10 April and began a four-day visit during which her passengers disembarked and she loaded ammunition and armor equipment. On 14 April, Ascella set sail for the Marshall Islands with another 44 passengers embarked.
Upon her arrival in Majuro Lagoon, the cargo ship began replenishing the warships of Task Force (TF) 58. During her sojourn there, she also provided berthing spaces for her of ficer passengers until the middle of the first week in May. On 6 June, she took on board 47 marines for passage to Roi Island at Kwajalein, where the ship remained and loaded defective ammunition and empty shell cases until 21 June. On that day, Ascella embarked 51 Navy passengers and weighed anchor for Hawaii. She stopped at Oahu from 30 June to 3 July to debark 24 of her passengers and unload her cargo. Another eight days at sea preceded her 11 July arrival back at San Francisco.
After disembarking the remaining 27 passengers, the ship started loading dry stores and provisions bound or the fleet in the Central Pacific. She got underway on 24 July and reached Pearl Harbor on 1 August. During the next two days, the cargo ship debarked passengers and took on mail bound for the Central Pacific. Returning to sea on the 3d, Ascella resumed the voyage west and stood into the lagoon at Eniwetok Atoll on 15 August for a month's visit. In addition to serving as station stores ship issuing supplies to various units of the fleet, she also provided berthing spaces for transient sailors. After transferring what remained of her cargo to Silica (IX-151) on 11 September, Ascella embarked 53 hospital patients for transportation to Hawaii on 16 September and began the voyage that same day. She reached Pearl Harbor on the 25th, exchanged her patient-passengers for 56 California-bound sailors, and continued on her way on the 27th. On 6 October, the ship pulled into San Pedro, Calif., and disembarked her passengers.
Three weeks of voyage repairs and cargo loading operations followed her return to the California coast. Ascella made a stop to take on fuel and water before continuing on to her first destination, Finschhafen, New Guinea. She arrived at that port on 23 November but remained only a few hours. Two days later, the cargoman hauled into Seeadler Harbor at the island of Manus in the Admiralties. Her stay there brought more provisioning duty and lasted until 15 December. On that day, the ship cleared Manus for a run to the Palaus and the Carolines. Following stops at Kossol Passage and at Ulithi, she departed the latter port on 10 January 1945 and shaped a course for New Zealand. Ascella moored at Princess Dock, Auckland, on 24 January. Another consignment of general stores and provisions hoisted on board, she steamed out of Auckland on 1 February. The cargo ship delivered supplies to Noumea, New Caledonia, between 5 and 9 February an d, with another group of passengers embarked, resumed her voyage. Ascella entered Seeadler Harbor once more on 16 February and discharged supplies and passengers. Having exchanged one group of passengers for another, the ship returned to sea on the 24th.
Ascella and her passengers were bound for the same duty station, Ulithi Atoll in the Carolines. They arrived there on 28 Febru and the cargo ship began her last assignment of World War I Throughout the final campaigns--Okinawa and the 3d/5th Fleet's air assault on the Japanese home islands--the cargo ship remained at Ulithi issuing stores and provisions to the warships prosecuting those actions. One mission-a round-trip voyage from Ulithi to Pearl Harbor and back in late July and early Augustinterrupted her service in the lagoon. Her assignment as station stores ship at Ulithi ended nine days after the formal surrender of Japan. On that day-11 September 1945-she weighed anchor for similar duty at Okinawa in the Ryukyu Islands. After duty at Okinawa from 16 September to 23 October, Ascella moved on to Samar in the central Philippines where she issued stores and provisions from 5 November to 24 December. Forced to get underway on Christmas Eve Day, she celebrated the holiday at sea before entering Shanghai, China, on the 30th. The cargo ship served as an accommodation ship at Shanghai through the first week of April 1946. On 10 April, she departed Shanghai and headed for the Marianas. Ascella performed some unspecified duty at Guam for about three weeks between 16 April and 5 May.
On the latter day, the ship weighed anchor and set sail for the United States. Following 18 days at sea, she arrived back in San Francisco on 22 May. Later, she moved to Stockton, Calif., where she loaded provisions before getting underway on 29 June for Hawaii. She arrived in the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard on 6 July and began inactivation procedures. Ascella was placed out of commission at Pearl Harb or on 13 August 1946. There, she remained until the spring of 1947 when she was towed to San Francisco to be returned to the Maritime Commission. Her name was struck from the Navy list on 22 May 1947, and she was transferred to the Maritime Commission for layup with the National Defense Reserve Fleet at Suisun Bay, Calif. She remained there under her merchant name, George C. Yount, until the mid-1960's.

Initial development of a domestic AK variant began c.a 1959, ΐ] and the first models submitted by Zastava for military field trials were with the early M64 series of rifles Α] with milled receivers, threaded barrels, familiar Yugo handguards, gas cutoffs for grenade launching, and several other diversities from the mainstay AK design, such as a bolt hold open device on the right side of the receiver, and a charging handle that appeared different from other AK models. Β] Though performances were satisfactory, the Yugoslav military did not adopt the rifle as the standard infantry armament. Γ]
In 1970, a second opportunity emerged, and Zastava was given the go ahead to begin with army funded mass production of the AP M70 and M70A series (Serbo-Croatian language: Automatska Puška M70 , M70 Automatic Rifle) of which the M70A was the folding stock version. Δ]
Before the larger models of these rifles were made, cost-cutting measures in production resulted in the removal of the internal bolt hold open, and relocation to the magazine follower. In addition, the usual placement of the barrel through threading into the receiver was replaced by the cheaper method of pressing and pinning the barrel into the receiver. Ε] Rifles produced with these new features were known as models AP M70B (fixed stock version), and M70AB (folding stock version). Ζ]
As with the M-70 series of automatic rifles, these models failed to be produced in larger quantities before further cost-efficiency production measures gave way to yet another model. This time the milled receiver was replaced by a stamped receiver of 0.9mm thickness, a firing rate reducer was added to the trigger group, and the muzzle brake replaced the muzzle nut that originally came on the two prior models. Yugoslavian AKs produced with these features were named models AP M70B1 (fixed stock) and M70AB1 (folding stock). Η]
These models eventually failed to mass-produce as well, before final alterations to the M70 rifle design resulted with the AP M70B2 (fixed stock) and M70AB2 (folding stock) models. These last two models featured a thicker 1.5mm stamped receiver and bulged front trunnion, which was intended to strengthen the rifle in order to make it more suitable for frequent grenade launching. ⎖] These two models would become the most widely produced of the M70 series, and in turn the most widely used model used by the YPA, as well as the various armed groups fighting in the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. Parts kits imported into the U.S. however, show markings that appear to contradict the final fixed stock model name. On these kits the bulged, thicker stamped receiver model is actually the M70B1 model.
All of the M70 models share the grenade launching ability with gas cutoff, the lengthened wooden handguard with 3 cooling slots, iron sights with flip-up illuminating elements, initially filled with phosphorus and later with tritium (Which is used on the current production M70's), to improve aiming at night the plunger that keeps the receiver cover in place during grenade launching, and a non-chrome lined barrel. Fire selectors have R markings for automatic fire (The R stands for "rafalna", "burst fire") and J for semi-automatic fire (The J stands for "jedinačna", "single").

Planetary History [ edit ]
Ascella was a young planet orbiting a white subdwarf star. Despite the high amounts of carbon dioxide and ammonia in the atmosphere, colonists settled on the world to take advantage of the large amounts of mineral and metal ores near the planet's surface. The native plant life was restricted to algae and a scrub brush, but these plants accelerated the later terraforming efforts. Their presence and the Terran Hegemony's advanced science removed the need for respirators in less than a century. Ώ]
The world fell under the jurisdiction of the Draconis Combine for most of its history, home to a small industry that produced fusion and electrical plants for civilian and light military vehicles. It also exported large amounts of radioactive materials and heavy metals. Despite this the system was largely overlooked during the Succession Wars. Ώ]

During the final years of the Star League, Ascella was the host to a Star League Defense Force garrison. Ε]
The Jihad [ edit ]
Ascella was the target of a Word of Blake attack during the first week of April 3069, which soon saw the world incorporated into the Word of Blake Protectorate. Ζ] It was the third of three worlds to be attacked by forces from Clan Ghost Bear on the 6th of October 3075, shortly after the Ghost Bears had agreed to support Devlin Stone's coalition, and was where their wave of attacks stalled the inbound Ghost Bear DropShips were attacked by Blakist Pocket WarShips, and half the DropShips were destroyed before they could make planetfall. Η] ⎖] ⎗] The Blakist Pocket WarShips were able to inflict such heavy damage because the Ghost Bear WarShips were already committed to supporting the attacks on Kaus Australis, Kaus Borealis and Kaus Media with almost a full Cluster of troops lost, the Ghost Bears redeployed the Leviathan-class battleship CGB Leviathan to the Ascella system from Kaus Borealis, where it proceeded to hunt down the remaining Blakist Pocket WarShips and aerospace fighters. ⎗]
In December 3075 the Ghost Bears successfully negotiated for support from Clan Snow Raven for the allied coalition as a result, a second Ghost Bear assault on Ascella began on the 9th of December, this time backed up by support from the Snow Ravens. Allied coalition forces under the command of Devlin Stone also dropped onto Ascella at roughly the same time, but the two groups found themselves fighting very different campaigns while Stone's Lament managed to capture Ascella's HPG compound and the capital city in only a week, the Ghost Bears spent two weeks securing Ascella's primary industrial complexes and spaceport in the face of a dogged, bitter resistance from Word of Blake Militia forces who used scorched earth tactics liberally from the beginning of the campaign. ⎘] ⎙]
The contrast between the campaign tactics used by the Ghost Bears and Devlin Stone's forces was marked the Ghost Bears killed every Blakist they could find, prompting the Word of Blake forces to use every means in their arsenal to resist. Stone's forces worked their way through the strong points around the capital city of Copiosus one at a time, and on the fifth day were in a position to force the surrender of the majority of the surviving Blakists within the city, including many of their leadership. Any Blakist forces still resisting Stone's forces were defeated on the sixth day, and when the Ghost Bears arrived in assault formation to attack Copiosus they found Stone's forces in place and the city in a relatively pristine condition. The strong implication is that Stone had kept the Ghost Bears unaware of the presence of his forces on Ascella, and presented the capture of Copiosus as a deliberate and pointed commentary on the tactics used by the Ghost Bears. In capturing the most heavily defended city on the planet in a manner which minimized casualties and collateral damage, Stone's forces had won a victory that was far more notable in Clan terms than those won by the Ghost Bears to the waste-averse Clan forces, Stone had won a superior victory and then slapped the Bears in the face with it. Whatever other response the Ghost Bears had to Stone's victory, the most visible was their rapid departure from Ascella as quickly as possible. Δ]
Ascella AK-137 - History
Kenneth was born June 6, 1921 in Pierre, South Dakota and enlisted on July 30, 1940 in Portland, Oregon. He was assigned temporary duty aboard the USS Rigel (Arb-1) on October 13, 1940 and was advanced in rating to Seaman Second Class on November 30, 1940 he had attended radio school starting October 13. On May 9, 1941 advanced to Seaman First Class and August 1, 1941 he was advanced in rating to Radio Mate Third Class. The USS Rigel was in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, according to Wikipedia:
Raymond was born February 6, 1915 in Jones, South Dakota and enlisted in the Navy on September 30, 1940 at San Francisco. He served aboard the USS Portland (CA-33), a heavy cruiser, starting November 28, 1940. He was advanced from Apprentice Seaman to S2c on February 1, 1941 and from S2c to S1c on July 1, 1941. The USS Portland was underway at sea on December 7, 1941 and saw much action in the South Pacific as detailed by Wikipedia:
Harry came aboard the USS Southern Seas on February 14, 1943 at Noumea, New Caledonia and remained on board until July 31, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshall Islands. While aboard he was advanced in rating to Coxswain on May 1, 1943 then disrated on May 18 back to Seaman First Class as a result of a deck court martial. On October 1, 1943 he was again advanced to Coxswain and on January 1, 1944 he was advanced to Boatswain's Mate Second Class.
On August 5, 1944 he boarded the USS Corregidor bound for the West Coast and reassignment to a new construction detail. On December 15, 1944 he was aboard the USS Bland (APA-134), an attack cargo ship that participated in landings at Okinawa. After the war, Harry married his wife Marie on June 27, 1946 and died February 15, 1989 in Champion, Pennsylvania at 78.
Landon was born in Augusta, Georgia on December 20, 1925 and enlisted at Macon, Georgia on March 11, 1942. He boarded the USS Barton (DD-599) on May 29, 1942 and was aboard at Guadalcanal when the ship was sunk on November 13, 1942, here is the story from Wikipedia:

He served aboard the USS Shackle (ARS-9), a rescue and salvage ship sailing from San Diego to San Francisco on March 18, 1944. On July 11, 1943 he was transferred for duty aboard the USS Southern Seas arriving on board September 4, 1944 at Saipan, Marianas Islands. Albert was born January 12, 1905 in Mississippi. He commissioned the USS Southern Seas in Auckland, New Zealand on December 22, 1942 and departed in Noumea, New Caledonia on January 25, 1943. He earned a Bronze Star for his skill in saving the USS Yukon (AF-9) a stores ship that was attacked by an enemy submarine on September 22, 1944.

Robert was born in Indiana on September 14, 1921 and enlisted in the Navy on September 9, 1940 at Kalamazoo, Michigan. He left the base at Norfolk, Virginia on May 28, 1941 aboard the USS Lassen bound for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. On July 18, 1941 he is received on board the USS Narwahl (SS-167), a submarine, as a Fireman Third Class and on October 1, 1941 his rating was changed to Fireman Second Class. On May 18, 1945 he was transferred from the sub division as a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class to the USS Holland (AS-3), a submarine tender, and then came aboard the USS Southern Seas at Guam, Marianas Islands on July 18, 1945. He was raised in rating to Chief Motor Machinist's Mate on July 1, 1945 and remained on board until the ship sank in the typhoon at Buckner Bay, Okinawa on October 9, 1945. Lt. Day 1 - 8/29/2020 [ edit | edit source ]
Ascella (pronounced ə-SEL-ə) became a town on the 29th of August, 2020. The original town chunk was created by the Mayor and Ambassador, Odsarh and Armadoodle respectively. It was very quickly populated by a number of residents < likale77, MetaBones, LordFael, Wleohy, nicsanity, and DapperPop >. Ascella began to expand very quickly and had around 40 chunks claimed. The people of Ascella eventually became acquainted with the economy system and started to buy and sell materials for the upkeep of the town. Later in the day we were then joined by some more people to populate the town farther, < pengwenyth, Ry0n69, and Quinnjet >. After more of the population began to arrive, some of the larger nations noticed that Ascella was now a large town on the Dynamic World Map. A nation known as Occidere recognized that we were a new and expanding town, sent General Doubble_ over to greet us. We, the people of Ascella, were greeted with an offer to have our city bought from us, but the offer was declined. They treated our decision with kindness and cordiality and General Doubble_ gave one of the residents of Ascella 'The Book of G0NF.' The gift was graciously accepted as General Doubble_ wen't on his way.
Day 2 - 8/30/2020 [ edit | edit source ]
As the first day came to a close, that night of rest was well deserved for what was about to follow. On August 30th, 2020, as The Ambassador Armadoodle and Town Sheriff MetaBones logged on to the server to continue work on our now moderately sized town, they were promptly greeted by the Syndic of the nearby town Vierina (of 'The_Third_Republic' nation). Syndic CoomBeans, as well, noticed this rather large town that seemingly had just appeared out of nowhere. Syndic CoomBeans and the Ambassador Armadoodle talked for a little while about setting up a tripartite pact between our two towns (Ascella and Vierina) and another town to the northwest of Ascella known as Tarnos (of the 'Greycoast' nation). After some time had past a member of Tarnos came to visit the new town of Ascella as well, but they had not greeted this new town with kind words. EmperorStorm (of Tarnos) had arrived in the modest town of Ascella and the people greeted him with kindness. The residents did not hesitate to tour this visitor around and show what they had created in the small amount of time that their people had been in this world. EmperorStorm seemed kind at first but then proclaimed that this small, new town was poor. Now, as right as they may have been, this 4 person town grew into a population of 14 over the first 24 hours that this settlement was founded and would continue to grow in the later hours of the second day.
After EmperorStorm had come to talk down upon land that they supposedly owned before we arrived, we continued to build our small village into a large town. Arriving to fill out the population more was < MmPourHotTeaOnMe and ahhhhhspiders >. These two people were welcomed into our town and they have been helping build Ascella into a nice and well rounded sea-based trading port. [MORE TO COME]
